Real People… True to Myself

Do I hold myself accountable and not make excuses?

Playwright Neil Simon once gave a commencement address with the theme of being true to yourself. He said, “Don’t listen to those who say it’s not done that way. Maybe it is not, but maybe it can be. Don’t listen to those who say you are taking too big a chance. Michelangelo would have painted the Sistine Chapel floor instead of the ceiling, and it would surely be rubbed out by now. Most importantly, don’t listen when the little voice inside of you rears its ugly head and says they are smarter, taller, prettier and more talented than you are. Be true to yourself.”

Hopefully, we are not nearly as concerned with what others might think about us as we are concerned about what we think of ourselves. Be true to your greatest potential. Reach down, dig deep and find that extra measure of will and determination that will allow you be the person you were meant to be. Don’t listen to those who say it can’t be done. Who knows, you just might be the one to do it!

Did I give my maximum effort? Did I do the very best I was capable of doing? And if not…why not? Am I measuring myself on what I have accomplished, or by what I should have accomplished with my ability? When faced with difficult decisions, do I make the popular choice…or the right one? Do I hold myself accountable and not make excuses? Be true to yourself. Step past the doubters and naysayers. Live your best life.
