Walking is one of the simplest and least expensive forms of exercise you can do. And the best part is you can do it just about anywhere as a way to sneak in extra activity throughout the day. One of my favorite parts of the spring and summer months is the ability to take a quick lunchtime walk at work to get some exercise and refocus for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, unless you live in a climate that is mild year-round, the winter months can be an obstacle to your exercise efforts. Enter walking trivia. This is a simple and fun way to get employees to move more throughout the day. Here’s how it works:
1. Create a list of questions and answers related to walking. Questions may include “About how many calories do you burn walking one mile?” or “How many miles would you have to walk to burn off the calories in a double cheeseburger?” Print the questions and answers on bright, easy-to-spot paper.
2. Place a question in one designated spot of the building each week. Place the answer in a different spot each week (to encourage employees to walk and find the answer.) Just make sure the answers are in an area where employees are actually allowed to walk (stairwell, hallway, etc.)
3. Change the question each week and encourage employees to locate, and jot down, the answer.
4. Run the trivia contest for as long as you’d like. At the end, ask participating employees to submit all of their answers. You may choose to reward everyone for participating or draw a name from one of the participants for a prize. Add bonus points for the highest number miles walked throughout the contest.
Try walking trivia this winter, or any time of year, to keep exercise fun and employees engaged.
