TOPS Spices of Life: Paprika

When I refracted last time on how doing BASIL things are indeed working for me, I promised I would expand on the concept. This is where PAPRIKA comes in.

My grandfather was a very SAGE person who once managed a thirty-six-unit apartment complex. I was a young kid when he hired me to help with general maintenance. Naturally, there were interactions with tenants, and I must have inflated my importance. After all, my grandfather was the manager. He told me that “we all know something, but we all do not know everything.” I now know he was telling me that I was “getting too big for my britches.

Here is how PAPRIKA reminded me about the THYME he shared his SAGE advice that has served me well. When I looked up PAPRIKA, I was surprised that I was wrong about this spice. I did not know that it was made from dried, ground peppers. For years, I thought it was just something my mother sprinkled on top of her potato salad to bring some color.

I do not mean to make it sound easy that just by going back to some BASIL steps, I will start losing weight again. Yes, it has helped my journey to improve my longevity. However, there are many things that I still do not know. At a recent chapter meeting, I had a PAPRIKA moment when a member did a program about protein. Again, what I thought were good protein choices were fine, but in reality, there are better ones that will help me.

A PAPRIKA moment is remarkably similar to what I refracted on in the Periodic Table of TOPS. You may remember the symbol EU for the term Eureka, which is a cry of joy or satisfaction when you discover something.

We all can benefit by having more PAPRIKA moments to help us lose weight and be our healthiest selves. However, it is important how we share these moments with other members. As my SAGE told me in so many words, nobody likes a “know-it-all.” Sharing is important, and supporting one who may use the information differently is even more significant.

Next off the spice rack will be CILANTRO. Trust me, when I refract on this one, it will be another PAPRIKA moment.

Paprika (Capsicum annuum): A red spice made from dried and ground peppers in the Capsicum annuum family. Many cuisines use it to add vibrant color and flavor to foods, ranging from sweet and mild to hot or smoky, depending on the variety. Commonly used in soups, stews, meats, vegetables, rice dishes, and as a garnish, paprika is especially important in Hungarian and Spanish cuisine. It contains antioxidants and small amounts of vitamins A and E, and proper storage in an airtight container away from heat and light to preserve its flavor and color.
