TOPS Spices of Life: Burnet

There are processes to follow in everything we do. I will often refract on various things I approach. Whether it is how I fold towels or how I choose to modify a bread recipe, I follow a process I set for myself based on my THYME on this earth.

Some steps that I follow have become habits. I have BURNET into my memory, and the actions require little thought, allowing me to focus on other things. The problem is that at times, I must deal with bad habits that have also been BURNET into my mind.

Unless deviating from a process causes harm, there is nothing wrong with adapting a plan to fit you best. My wife recently told me I was folding the towels wrong. In my opinion, there are many ways they can be folded, and once the linen closet door is closed, what difference does it make?

Another example is in my rye bread recipe. I will get CARAWAY with caraway seeds because I enjoy the classic rye flavor they provide. If you don’t, you can modify the recipe; just do not BURNET.

My refraction is like LAVENDER: Sometimes there is more than one use or way to achieve a goal. Again, just along there is no harm done, or I do not BURNET.

I have tried not to get CARAWAY when I explain how TOPS worked for me and saved my life. It is important not to overwhelm a newcomer with all my SAGE advice. It’s more important to share when asked and guide them to their own PAPRIKA moment. They must not be told they are doing a process incorrectly. Sure, I get excited, and I want everyone to succeed, but I try not to overshare.

In sharing one’s experiences with others, remember that, like CILANTRO, some factors are beyond one’s control on a journey to longevity. Never make others feel they must follow your path.

Kindness and support can go a long way to helping one succeed. Just remember: Unless a process is doing harm, we all can adapt a process to fit our needs and help towards our goals.

Next time I will spice things up with a little BORAGE.

Burnet (Sanguisorba minor): Known as “salad burnet”, this is a leafy herb rather than a true spice. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, it has been enjoyed for centuries in salads, soups and herbal remedies. Its delicate, cucumber-like flavor makes it a refreshing addition to many dishes, especially during the warmer months.

One of burnet’s greatest strengths is that it adds fresh flavor with virtually no calories, making it a helpful ingredient for people trying to lose or maintain weight. It can enhance salads, yogurt dips, vinegars and cold beverages without relying on high-calorie dressings or sauces.

For those pursuing healthier eating habits, burnet offers an easy way to make meals more interesting. Fresh herbs like burnet encourage the use of fewer high-fat seasonings while adding natural flavor and visual appeal. Small changes like this can make healthy eating more enjoyable and sustainable over time.
