Making the Right Moves with TOPS: Exchange

The game of chess has many terms that describe various moves of the game. Soon, I will be using the names of actual pieces used on the board. However, there are still a few more terms for me to refract on.

I believe this next term will motivate your spirit. In terms of chess, EXCHANGE refers to trading pieces of equal value.

In TOPS, the EXCHANGE program has helped many members on their journey to a healthy lifestyle. While some may think the TOPS plan is as challenging as a game of chess to conquer, many members are able to make it work for them.

The use of the word EXCHANGE refers to food items in a specific portion, belonging to a particular category that may be interchanged with other food items in the same group. An EXCHANGE is simply a substitution or choice.

The ATTACK is to remember the names of the six groups of food. They are:

  • Starch
  • Protein
  • Fruit
  • Vegetable
  • Milk/Milk Substitutes
  • Fat

Another ADVANTAGE is learning that calories are derived from three nutrient sources:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Protein
  • Fats
In TOPS, the exchange program has helped many members on their journey to a healthy lifestyle. An exchange is a substitution or choice.

Many years ago, I spoke at a regional laboratory conference, and my topic was about the pros and cons of probiotics. What surprised and intrigued me as I prepared, however, was data showing that a healthy diet has more influence on our microbiome than any supplements we could take.

The STRATEGY of consuming various food groups matched the TOPS EXCHANGE program. I was able to turn a few minutes of my presentation into a bit of a TOPS commercial, highlighting the benefits of our organization.

If you’re struggling with the EXCHANGE system, I encourage you to explore TOPS resources like My Day One, the TOPS Talk Successful Exchange Strategies with Cynthia Mack, the 28 Day Meal Plan, Recipes of the Month (which always include exchanges), TOPS recipe videos on YouTube and Choose Your Foods: Food Lists for Weight Management (The Exchange System), available in the TOPS Store. Be sure to also keep an eye out in the coming months for a new TOPS nutrition booklet—a preview is in the September/October issue of TOPS News.

Take a good POSITION and make the right move.
