In anything I do, I will always seek an edge or ADVANTAGE. My thinking is: why do something the hard way if there might be an easier or better option? There must be a more efficient way to complete any certain task—it’s human nature to think that way.
During a chess game, a player will seek an ADVANTAGE by positioning key pieces in a way that makes winning a little bit easier.
I must admit, early in my battle with obesity I looked for an effortless way to shed my excess pounds. Unfortunately, I wasted a lot of time seeking an ADVANTAGE. I tried some of the popular, well-known programs. I even tried some of the snake oil that late-night TV infomercials were peddling.
It would have saved me a great sum of money, time, stress and anxiety had I found TOPS sooner on my journey to a healthier lifestyle. TOPS had, and still has, the best ADVANTAGE to education, support and accountability to help me gain a healthier lifestyle. Everything is positioned for us TOPS members to succeed, but as always, knowing what to do is different from actually doing it.
Although it has been almost twenty-five years since I found TOPS, I still wonder why TOPS is the best-kept secret when it comes to weight loss organizations.
Recently, I represented TOPS at a summit in Utah. As I began my presentation, I asked how many people had heard of TOPS. The number was few, and many were actual members. Others who were not members but knew about TOPS said their mothers or grandmothers were members but thought we no longer existed. Again, I ask: why are we still the best-kept secret?
TOPS has another ADVANTAGE that we can use to break the secret. This ADVANTAGE is our members.
Seventy-seven years ago, when TOPS was organized, the only chapters were in the greater Milwaukee area. Without the ADVANTAGE of the internet, social media and email, chapters started spreading out to all corners of the US and Canada. TOPS is a true example of grassroots ACTIVITY.
I am so glad that many years ago, members spread the word about TOPS among their family, friends and co-workers. Had they not done so, TOPS would not have reached Maine. Without the ADVANTAGE of TOPS, who knows what turn my health would have taken. TOPS has saved my health and my life.
