I have previously refracted on my first time I went to a TOPS chapter meeting: the fear of the unknown, being extremely uncomfortable and being weighed by someone I had just met. My thoughts were racing on what world I had just stepped into. Twenty-plus years ago, an in-person meeting was the only option. Given where my head was during that time in my life, I am surprised I went for a second meeting. I have my wife to thank for that initial support (see POSITION).
After I joined and started to embrace Mrs. Manz’s philosophy on how to navigate the journey to a healthier being, I understood the importance of meeting as a group. Around 2012-2013, as a newly minted Field Staff member, another option to meet was introduced: meeting virtually online. At the time, I did not really give that option much thought.
When a game of chess is played in person with a physical chess set, they call it OVER THE BOARD. I was astonished to discover this term and refracted on why it existed. Players use the term OVER THE BOARD to distinguish it from playing chess online.

By using a chess game as a backdrop to this current blog series, I was incredibly surprised to learn of the OVER THE BOARD description. There are great but different ADVANTAGES for both in-person and virtual chess matches.
One positive byproduct of the pandemic for TOPS was the opportunity to embrace the virtual platform and enhance online meetings. Having the option of a Virtual Chapter has been beneficial to many TOPS members.
By being OVER THE BOARD, there are more chances to network, get involved in enhanced communications and build supportive relationships. All of these things help form a good COMBINATION of opportunities for a higher engagement that promotes a collaborative environment. It’s a good way to gain a working STRATEGY.
In a virtual setting, some of the ADVANTAGES from OVER THE BOARD may still be there, but not as intense. However, convenience, flexibility and being able to accommodate reaching out to a larger audience have a vital part in TOPS Nation.
To be honest, my first OPENING was almost my last. Having only one meeting option could have been my undoing. There are no guarantees in the game of life; however, if I had not gone to that second meeting, I would have had serious medical problems by now. Refracting on this horrible thought, I cannot help but ask myself: are there other potential members who may be missing that second meeting?
I am over the moon that I kept using the OVER THE BOARD option to meet in person. However, I encourage you that if you know someone who needs help navigating that twisting road to a healthier lifestyle and is embarrassed to meet in person for whatever reason, you should introduce them to TOPS virtual options. It is just another tool in the ATTACK on obesity. You can help that person with their next move.
