Sometimes the most restorative place to be is right at home. Although<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alive.com\/lifestyle\/why-sleep-tourism-is-taking-over\/\"> sleep tourism<\/a> is currently trending in the travel industry, many of us do not carve out enough time to<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/are-you-in-the-rest-gap\/\"> adequately recharge<\/a> in our daily lives. I personally struggle with this in terms of my fitness routine. Working out seven days a week is an excellent habit to have. However, there are weeks when I neglect to balance high-intensity workouts, like running and Tabata sets, with more low-impact exercise, such as yoga or nature strolls with my pup. The overall effects of stress on my body are noticeable in terms of increased muscle fatigue and chronic soreness. Despite feeling mentally exhausted, I often struggle with sleep quality during these times. Since I am not planning on taking a long trip this summer, I decided to get some professional advice from physician assistant and yoga professional Nora O&#8217;Reilly (PA-C, PHD) about how I could get better slumber while on my <em>staycation<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"687\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-1024x687.jpg\" alt=\"Sleep tips for your staycation.\" class=\"wp-image-3714\" style=\"width:602px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-1024x687.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-768x515.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-1536x1031.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-2048x1374.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/toa-heftiba-C9WnRj-CZEk-unsplash-611x410.jpg 611w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The sleep tips O\u2019Reilly shared with me include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Move your body joyfully for at least 30 minutes a day.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Calm your mind down in the evening by doing a \u201cbrain dump\u201d via journaling. (Do this to clear your head of tomorrow\u2019s to-dos and dial back into yourself.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to stay on a somewhat regular schedule. (Most of us need about a 14-hour wake cycle so that our body knows when it can be expected to rest.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid drinking too much. (Aim to have only one drink a few hours before bedtime.)&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn off all screens at least an hour before bed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your sleeping quarters at a lower temperature.
