This is one of several reasons that on June 20, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force announced that an\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/06\/20\/health\/uspstf-anxiety-depression-adults\/index.html\">anxiety screening is now recommended for all adults<\/a>. Chronic anxiety can trigger other mental health issues or exacerbate physiological symptoms of current health concerns. This is particularly troublesome for women and people of color \u2014 two populations that recent studies have shown are in the middle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youthtothepeople.com\/blog\/to-the-people--youth-to-the-people\/livelihood-is-a-human-right.html\"><em>the rest gap<\/em><\/a>. Consider the following stats:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/d2m4p904.na1.hubspotlinks.com\/Ctc\/2O+113\/d2M4P904\/VVRR_52mn0GyW4t_mgd3RPLp2W2v98dD50CsGTN9h9bHp5knJZV3Zsc37CgFnxVCYXNG8S0pgjW6ShJwB8z0r8vVb-LTY484h1WW8YCJxf8CY0H-W98yYWc6g55jLW90fns55b86cqW70V7SK5Q8msyW4L1_xC3V9zSRW5LCmBx76cWCVW6PPFnL6jhxjKW6dxrkd42X-BNW4F6WbP1Sz3k7W2r1zWv6VVwgMW6m6M7S8khZSHW4Mr57M6zmhglW2tzkcs1QmzwzVCDtmn80DShZW5NzJnf2-XszZW326znh9bRHYlW1lWH1f54HjzsW4hNVyj3pFp7yW5slzJW2RwvhJW8L7L2J40gkYbW9c57Jz2rjcc2W6Zj67r27T7tLW6RXrsQ4HbKzSN5H9pPY41SThW5FM4d33z9GGFW5bj6m11k5j42VFKJJ439Qb4KW5HzHrG4zk13DV85D8N4-VScrM-R7Lq1cclXW1nMKmM5bt5ZgN1RMqvGHK9WNN1wCyvmwxqYjW2jSdc11K_VVKW573f_-23H12t3qb-1\">The Sleep Foundation<\/a>, most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night in order to function at their best, but women tend to get worse sleep compared to men due to more sleep fragmentation and lower quality sleep. Women are also 40% more likely to be diagnosed with insomnia.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/d2m4p904.na1.hubspotlinks.com\/Ctc\/2O+113\/d2M4P904\/VVRR_52mn0GyW4t_mgd3RPLp2W2v98dD50CsGTN9h9bH55knJGV3Zsc37Cg-J-W4K_QHX2VyqBjW6BhfN-82Z-xjW5B8Cq83L-kH3N1Zvpbgvr2YSW6Kgll652ZwCmW1Tl1yD8QYbjcW7bpLL95Rz3BbW49YQSF62ZCvWW8QZD0s1njdQLV3z5Qq3Xvf93W79yF3v81PscRW6QN3JS2Zm-6LVS18Zk2GPZhtW4_g9VT9fjJ37W4btC0x2RCt5VW4f3xy-8d72gCW8Mm6gn3TwwwTW9cxc0n8MYlbxW6VBYTG335tFmW8S_y7S4mTMFTW2k6rTl51B2TbW7xrv133vsqZdW3zK31t1bVxg4VvF9p64gH6n-W8FZBSj8tP5xhW17Jstj6zz2X-W1jBXd_691XP6W8s-mN86hZFHcW8_q6tV8zfZT0V3XfPt5vqVz9N7PMRZ1JY47cW7NjnH26GWFPBV6LRNZ5n8ZGsW99gxsz5b9xcQW1Q-rwb1ZBr9hW1ZrKQK2P6B-f31cK1\">The National Health Interview Survey<\/a>\u202f found that Black adults were almost twice as likely to sleep less than seven hours per night, compared to white adults.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An article in <a href=\"https:\/\/d2m4p904.na1.hubspotlinks.com\/Ctc\/2O+113\/d2M4P904\/VVRR_52mn0GyW4t_mgd3RPLp2W2v98dD50CsGTN9h9bJB3lScZV1-WJV7CgQklW7dBbTF1_PcCQW4-JLQS8P6cF4W2fK6bm2pY9bBW3DY08t5S1zKCW4Lx2Tc8yhz56W1wWpvj1B6qySW76dbYr1y-nS6W94Vkbb49bB3LW1-FDpw4_hgnVW4-X87D75wFv0VXWSNy8qx20vW2lR8551kNL8DW8ym2hR461rVJW9lZFpC4h758bW498Krq4zzZCcW1zlry56SrTwmW7qd0Yv6KQYYqW8fLM3K6HkhzfW3Wcnlv8SCtrfN3yxlgmTLQFyW76wNYw4Q1WpCW18JCSx2ChZ06VyzZrC8DNQJWW2vwz4_7fKkhjW9h91_917m_jZN7Ncf013rB9dW8n2krk2m0rzMW2y5v873lP5zgVTjzQN121RzDW9bMtPq7XXjxk31_l1\">The Atlantic<\/a> explained how ideally most of us should spend 20% of the night in\u202f <em>slow-wave sleep<\/em> \u2014 the most restorative period of rest. However, Black people tend to spend only 15% of their sleep time in this state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Occasionally, we get less sleep than our bodies technically need. But poor sleep quality long-term can drastically impair our capacity to achieve other wellness goals. <a href=\"https:\/\/d2m4p904.na1.hubspotlinks.com\/Ctc\/2O+113\/d2M4P904\/VVRR_52mn0GyW4t_mgd3RPLp2W2v98dD50CsGTN9h9bJB3lScZV1-WJV7CgXnMW784M518xz7hhW2kNN423SkCgjW63KvrN5l04r_W6sxFWL7B79P5W3Y8RKd1QPFRpW3VhGkq71Qtw0W2GrXlp8Z5lH7MpD5Jgg2WQ4W3WT9p65MBMYcN5htGTKZcsGnN2ZRKHsVr852W12C82K6tDl5kW4h0mb18BCDTGW1QNTyx19z-XcW3F646k4GBvCtW5lzplT4xDljTW9jjwBq21xTGvN8bTkyxrPrqzW6d_YMt8TM9n2W52Pf4524bYQZV6LFJ785Z-SMV9Z2Yh6lx5pWW7wJ6GW52MHnwW6JWWxm2b74JxW6cXLK18sC7H4W6NK3YR6wn_wGW2XyZtC8N9gHFW7MQSp87hPsT1VCrVSc6l4K-lW8MZ2jF3HBDqX32KY1\">Cedars-Sinai Medical Center<\/a>\u202f affirms that sleep deprivation can lead to drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, memory problems and a weakened immune system. Plus, this might only be the beginning if such sleeping patterns persist \u2013 mood swings, depression, heart disease and strokes all become more likely when a deficiency in sleep is your norm.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If anxious thoughts, traumatic memories or irrational fears are keeping you up at night, try journaling before bed. You may also want to connect with a licensed mental health provider for additional tools and support. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffolkdbtjl.com\/\">Jeanette Lorandini, LCSW<\/a>\u202foffers the following advice in terms of exploring potential counseling options:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cMany people are nervous about the costs of therapy. If you have mental health coverage insurance, start with your insurance provider\u2019s portal,\u201d she advises. \u201cIf you don\u2019t, use (online) therapy databases like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/therapists\">Psychology Today<\/a> to locate therapists near you. Many therapy practices offer sliding scale fees. Always ask!\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u201c<\/strong>Virtual therapy may work for you if you have a quiet space at home where you feel safe to talk freely,&#8221; Lorandini states. \u201cVirtual might also be the best fit if you live in a remote area or have challenging caretaking schedules.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, don\u2019t forget about the myriad of resources available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnHealth\/10-ways-to-get-good-sleep.aspx\">TOPS.org<\/a> and from the TOPS community as a whole.
