Some of us may not be feeling our usual \u201cspring cheer\u201d \u2026 and that\u2019s okay. The last year has brought unprecedented challenges and changes to all our lives. We could all benefit\u00a0from\u00a0a self-care check-in. To be clear, I am NOT a licensed professional counselor, psychologist or healthcare professional.\u00a0I\u2019m simply someone who reads a lot about behavior and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/the-reality-of-motivation\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/the-reality-of-motivation\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1617879662306000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF07b1FyY1PRSLXbEgTHF5Cw1uaDg\">motivation<\/a>\u00a0and who has been fumbling toward health and wellness for the past 13+ years. My hope is that the things that help me may also help you in some small way. In an effort to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnYou\/spring-cleaning-your-weight-loss-goals.aspx\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnYou\/spring-cleaning-your-weight-loss-goals.aspx&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1617879662306000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFhTy-sjMrVrHkxdSHIo1gJOd_DqA\">welcome a new season<\/a>\u00a0and work toward meaningful change, here are three things I\u2019m leaving behind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The word \u201cshould.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<em>I should work out.\u00a0I should fold the clean clothes that have been sitting in the laundry basket for five days.\u00a0I should eat better this week after my calorie-fest of a weekend.<\/em>\u00a0Does this sound familiar? More often than not, the word \u201cshould\u201d is rooted in guilt and negativity. It implies that whatever you\u2019re doing isn\u2019t enough. Instead, I\u2019ve been trying to focus on\u00a0<em>why<\/em>\u00a0I want (or don\u2019t want) to do a certain task or activity. It\u2019s a work in progress, but I\u2019m slowly de-cluttering my thoughts of lingering \u201cshoulds\u201d that aren\u2019t serving me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Self-judgment.<\/strong>\u00a0We are often our own harshest critic and I am very much guilty of this. Rather than focusing on my flaws and insecurities (or letting those pesky \u201cshoulds\u201d creep in), I\u2019m working on building more self-compassion. One exercise that may help is to write a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ggia.berkeley.edu\/practice\/self_compassionate_letter\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/ggia.berkeley.edu\/practice\/self_compassionate_letter&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1617879662306000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFfDawc6wkKOv4u0qDDz5qTY_jeTg\">self-compassion letter<\/a>. Evidence shared by UC Berkeley\u2019s Greater Good Science Center found that participants who wrote a self-compassion letter every day for one week reported greater happiness than they had beforehand.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The need to be perfect.\u00a0<\/strong>Perfection is not possible. And the great thing is,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/okay-good-enough\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/okay-good-enough\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1617879662306000&amp;usg=AFQjCNF_gvWxn5lbG1spwinn3LLiogRKoA\">it\u2019s not necessary either<\/a>. This is something I have to repeat to myself often. The reality is, when you try something new,\u00a0you probably won\u2019t be very good at it initially. And that\u2019s okay! Don\u2019t let the need to be perfect stand in the way of trying something new or different.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have noticed that the word \u201cwork\u201d is mentioned in this post multiple times. All of this takes a lot of self-reflection, patience and, yes,\u00a0<em>work<\/em>. And speaking with a licensed professional counselor can help you arm yourself with the tools you need to do this work.
