This was an unsustainable approach that just left me feeling bad about myself when I chose to skip the gym. I\u2019m still a work in progress, but I\u2019m learning to build more of a &#8220;get to&#8221; approach to fitness and less of a &#8220;have to.&#8221; Is exercise beneficial for weight control? Strong evidence points to \u201cyes,\u201d but there are so many more reasons to get moving that go beyond numbers on a scale.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few (in no particular order) that I\u2019ve been paying closer attention to lately.<\/p>\n<p>1. Better quality of life.<br \/>\n2. Improved thinking and brain health.<br \/>\n3. Stronger bones and muscles.<br \/>\n4. Reduced risk of injury from falls.<br \/>\n5. Ease of everyday tasks like getting in and out of a car or climbing stairs.<br \/>\n6. You don\u2019t need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/TOPS\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnFitness\/ace-this-simple-at-home-workout.aspx\">invest<\/a> in expensive equipment (I\u2019m looking at you, fitness mirrors).<br \/>\n7. Opportunity to connect with a friend or loved one.<br \/>\n8. Highlight of your <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/pets-and-mental-health\/\">dog\u2019s day<\/a>.<br \/>\n9. Chance to see what your body is capable of.<br \/>\n10. Improved sleep quality.<br \/>\n11. Reduced feelings of anxiety.<br \/>\n12. Reduced blood pressure.<br \/>\n13. Improved bowel movements (someone had to say it).<br \/>\n14. Better mood.<br \/>\n15. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/Tops\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnFitness\/mastering-the-martial-arts.aspx\">Better balance<\/a>.<br \/>\n16. Lowered risk of heart disease.<br \/>\n17. Opportunity to listen to music, audiobooks or podcasts.<br \/>\n18. Increased energy.<br \/>\n19. Chance to be outdoors.<br \/>\n20.
