But during a time when watching our dollars spent feels more critical than ever, I\u2019m slowly learning to be more mindful of how much I\u2019m spending and where. One area that continues to be a work in progress is my food and grocery budget. To help you become more of a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/how-to-reduce-food-waste-with-tips-from-tops-members\/\">frugal foodie<\/a>, I\u2019ve put together this list of tips.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Make takeout a special occasion.<\/strong>\u00a0During our state\u2019s safer-at-home order earlier this year, restaurant delivery became a regular occurrence for me. Now I\u2019m focused on making this more of a weekly treat (spending $20 a week on takeout instead of $30 saves over $500 a year \u2026 yikes). And when you&#8217;re supporting your favorite local restaurant, try to skip the delivery apps and order directly through the restaurant instead. You\u2019ll save on service fees and other charges, and more of the money will go to the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Always make a list.\u00a0<\/strong>While this tip is nothing new, it\u2019s one of the best tools you can use to prevent overspending at the grocery store. I\u2019m embarrassed to admit how many times I\u2019ve walked out of the store having overspent with no clue what I bought. If a paper list isn\u2019t really your thing, keep one in your phone and add to it throughout the week as you think of what you need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Save the flavor.<\/strong>\u00a0Whenever there\u2019s a sauce or dressing packet in a frozen entr\u00e9e or salad kit, I typically save half of it for later. It\u2019s usually too much for one serving anyway, and saving it can be stretched or tweaked a little for other tasty possibilities. Take a packet of enchilada sauce, for example. Use half of it for your enchiladas and save the other half for roasted vegetables. Blend the sauce with a smidge of melted butter or olive oil, plus chili, onion and garlic powders, and drizzle over your favorite vegetables for a sweet and smoky side or mini meal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Chill out with frozen vegetables.<\/strong>\u00a0In my opinion, frozen vegetables are the most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnNutrition\/eat-more-vegetables.aspx\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.tops.org\/tops\/TOPS\/FeaturedArticles\/FocusOnNutrition\/eat-more-vegetables.aspx&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609416276347000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHzsJLjGytkToPBb9sJ93YE3WiYHQ\">underrated healthy food<\/a>. You don\u2019t need to wash them, they\u2019re widely available, they last for months,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fruitsandveggies.org\/stories\/about-the-buzz-frozen-and-canned-fruits-and-vegetables-vs-fresh\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/fruitsandveggies.org\/stories\/about-the-buzz-frozen-and-canned-fruits-and-vegetables-vs-fresh\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1609416276347000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEOKbjTu13flafgyZsIIqtiqtmkgw\">they\u2019re just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts<\/a>\u00a0and they\u2019re usually cheap.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will these tips help you become wealthy overnight? Not exactly.
