In addition to being a tasty and filling snack all on their own, they\u2019re also a delicious alternative to mayo on sandwiches or butter on toast. Avocados even share the adoration of paleo diet followers, food exchange fans, vegetarians and vegans alike!<\/p>\n<p>But what happens when something you love turns against you? I\u2019m talking about a new and unfortunate trend called \u201cavocado hand.\u201d A growing number of people are ending up in the emergency room as a result of improperly cutting an avocado. Some physicians have even gone so far as to call for safety labels to be put on the fruits! I\u2019ve had a few close calls myself while trying to remove the pit with a knife. To help you avoid \u201cavocado hand,\u201d here are some tips:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/avocado-image4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1212 size-medium\" style=\"margin-right: 1.5em;\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/avocado-image4-375x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/avocado-image4-375x375.jpg 375w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/avocado-image4-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/avocado-image4-250x250.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.tops.org\/wellness-wednesday\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/avocado-image4.jpg 671w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a small, sharp knife to cut the avocado instead of a large knife.<\/li>\n<li>Place the avocado on a cutting board on a sturdy surface. A damp cloth (or a sticky mat) under the cutting board will help keep it from slipping. Using one hand, lightly grip the avocado around the sides to hold it in place. Make sure to keep your fingers out of the way.<\/li>\n<li>Cut lengthwise down the middle of the fruit and rotate to continue cutting down the other side. Then, using both hands, twist the avocado open to expose the pit.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t hack the knife into the pit while holding the avocado. It\u2019s too easy for the knife to slip and cut your hand.<\/li>\n<li>Instead, scoop out the pit with a spoon or use your fingers to dig it out. You may smash some of the fruit beneath the pit, but if you\u2019re making guacamole, for example, this shouldn\u2019t matter much.<\/li>\n<li>Last, either slice, then scoop, or just scoop out the insides of the avocado. Voila! You\u2019re ready to eat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember, when it comes to culinary adventures in the kitchen\u2014safety first! Don\u2019t let the mishandling of avocados get in the way of your enjoyment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I love avocados.
