When Lois Lepine joined TOPS, the year was 1968.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even in 2023, she remembers it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of my friends were in the group,\u201d Lepine said. \u201cWhen I started coming to meetings, they\u2019d had the club not quite a year. The meetings were near my house. (My friends) encouraged me to come, and I needed to get out of the house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepine was a busy, hand-on mom, who was also taking in foster babies at the time, and considering she was in the thick of it, parenting-wise, TOPS meetings were \u201ca good thing,\u201d as she recalls, for her to take in some occasional separation from all her duties in the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I stuck with it!\u201d Lepine said with a laugh. \u201cMy friends did, too. (All these years later), here I am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here she is, is right!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepine is a longtime TOPS member in Big Bend, Wisconsin. She adores her chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe whole group just becomes your friends,\u201d she said. \u201cYou associate with them, call them \u2013 it\u2019s very encouraging. I just kept hanging in there, and I thought I needed the support over the years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepine\u2019s chapter is a pretty balanced crew. They want to make sure that all the work of staying afloat doesn\u2019t fall on one person, so the group \u201cappoints\u201d people to help run the programs; sometimes they\u2019ll do exercises, or whatever it takes to lend a hand to Chapter Leader Lemoine Worthington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Worthington, by the way, who recommended Lepine as this latest Member of the Month. He admires Lepine, and what a mainstay she\u2019s been at chapter, year in and year out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some time, Lepine\u2019s health became a top concern. She was dealing with Atrial fibrillation, and then had to go to a nursing home and rehabilitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy kids weren\u2019t sure I\u2019d make it,\u201d Lepine said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepine now has an around-the-clock caregiver, but she felt incredibly relieved to come home. She\u2019s lived in Big Bend for 60 years. In the warmer months, she has a son who swings by to cut the grass, and her daughter-in-law handles the flower beds. She feels fortunate to have the help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to access TOPS materials online has been a big advantage, as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTOPS has great information, and it keeps you accountable,\u201d Lepine said. \u201cAnd if you have a gain, (fellow members) don’t put you down \u2013 they just encourage you to do better next week, or help you consider what your problem might be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TOPS has gotten Lepine into some healthy routines that she just can\u2019t seem to shake, as well. (And we\u2019re so glad!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been in the habit for years of writing a report at my desk,\u201d she said. \u201cI put my activities that I think I\u2019m going to do for the day \u2026 that makes me accountable to look back at. This way, every time I took something to eat, I had to put it on the paper.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepine said she\u2019s been \u201con the heavier side\u201d for her whole life, and although she\u2019s not at her goal weight, she\u2019s always working on becoming a healthier version of herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone works together,\u201d Lepine said. \u201cNo one puts anyone down. Everyone is so helpful. Caring for one another \u2013 that\u2019s what this is. And it\u2019s week after week, not just when you feel like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lepine would know a thing or two about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fun fact: She\u2019s cared for an incredible number of foster children: 155 of them, in fact, over the course of 35 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
