It just makes sense for spouses to join TOPS together. At least, that\u2019s what David and Chris Billing have found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The husband-wife pair is one of at least five married couples at TOPS MO 0502 Wright City \u2013 and it\u2019s an example David has seen firsthand, as well. One of the other husband-wife teams at his chapter is none other than his parents. David\u2019s mother is a 17-year KOPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt first, I didn\u2019t want to horn in on (my parents\u2019) club, but they always talked about the group, and how much they enjoyed the people, and at some point, I knew I needed to lose about 30 pounds,\u201d David said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And David admits he wasn\u2019t quick to overhaul his eating habits or start up an exercise regimen on his own. So, he joined TOPS for the support. Next, he asked his wife to come on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

David has now been a member for about four years; and chapter leader for nearly two. Chris Billing started her journey in May 2021. COVID-19 played a role in signing her up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCOVID kind of ended up being one of those things \u2013 you thought you had everything under control,\u201d Chris Billing said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But she didn\u2019t. In Chris\u2019s younger years, she was used to keeping her weight in check, but circumstances changed when the pandemic hit. Not to mention, it\u2019s harder once you get a little older, said Chris, who\u2019s now in her early 60s. It was just another reason why TOPS was a perfect fit at just the right time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf a married couple does it together \u2013 meaning both people are in the same club with the same goal, they encourage each other,\u201d David said. \u201cAnd then there\u2019s some accountability at home, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Chris with a laugh, \u201cPlus, if a husband and wife are in the same club, you\u2019re not working against each other \u2013 you can ask questions like, is that your second<\/em> cupcake, David?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Word of mouth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Billings\u2019 neighbor started the program, too, around the same time. That\u2019s another thing that makes this chapter so special: The group grows the old-fashioned way, largely based on word of mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWright City is a small town, but people come in from all over the place,\u201d David said. \u201cOne member has probably an hour drive. A family member will want to support another family member. We\u2019ll drive in. We care about each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of each meeting, members talk about who might need some encouragement this week, and at the end, they name someone for whom they are grateful. And that\u2019s not all. New members are made to feel very welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chapter announces the person, and posts a few of the new member\u2019s details \u2013 such as his or her birthday and address \u2013 and lots of fellow members will follow up by sending a welcome card in the mail. Someone sits with the new face on his or her first day, as well, to help answer questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leaders also try not to use too much insider TOPS jargon, and they aim to make the meeting experience more like an upbeat gathering, said Diana Kennedy, the chapter\u2019s weight recorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s almost like a social event, initially,\u201d Kennedy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Chris, \u201cIf the meeting starts at 9, a lot of people get there at 8, just to catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People talk amongst each other, and chat about the best ways to keep spreading the news about TOPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDavid and I talk often about being in the group,\u201d Chris said. \u201cAnd people are receptive to knowing it’s not a diet, but a support group. We just talk about what we\u2019re doing. When people hear \u2018diet,\u2019 they\u2019re like, \u2018Oh, another diet.\u2019 People say, \u2018I\u2019ve tried that and that and that already.\u2019 But accountability is the biggest thing. And friends and family see how much you\u2019re losing, and that sparks interest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rebounding from COVID<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Billings\u2019 advice for others already in the program? Be supportive to one another, and challenge each member to talk to someone about TOPS each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s proven effective in Wright City. The chapter boasted as many as 90-some members, for some time. That number dropped into the 60s during COVID, but it\u2019s slowly rebounding. At last check, they were in the mid-70s, membership-wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The chapter has 30 KOPS, as well. They make it a point to recognize these hard-working members. In fact, on the day of this interview, David said, 10 KOPS had just presented at the program, sharing with the group how they\u2019ve maintained their weights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of their ideas included: Changing your plate size, brushing your teeth after supper \u2013 because you don\u2019t want to eat, and have to brush them again before bed \u2013 counting your calories, carbs, and of course, reading food labels, along with implementing exercise and drinking lots of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members genuinely seem to love attending meetings and sharing\/hearing the best tricks of the trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lifestyle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a diet. It\u2019s a lifestyle,\u201d David said. \u201cWhen people come, they often come for the social aspect \u2026 people need that social time. Members learn it\u2019s not just a group where you come and you go. There are friendships made.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Added Kennedy, \u201cMy family has tried to get me to move to St. Louis. I was like, \u2018I have TOPS family. I can\u2019t move!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris echoed that same sentiment: \u201cMy husband and I have moved closer to our sons and grandkids, but we drive 25 miles one way because of the people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, David acknowledged everyone who built this chapter into what it is today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe stand on the shoulders of the people who came before us,\u201d David said. \u201cThis was a big club when I joined. The fact that we survived COVID is remarkable. We\u2019ll continue to focus on each other, and we\u2019ll keep growing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
