Time is the only resource or gift distributed equally to everyone. Each human being in every hemisphere and time zone has precisely 168 hours a week to spend. Time never stops to rest, never hesitates, and never looks forward or backward. None of us ever seems to have enough time, yet we all have all there is…or ever will be. Time spends itself now, this moment, which is why how you spend your time is far more important than all the material possessions you may own or positions you may attain.
Many people live in the past, wishing they could reverse time, largely to undo mistakes. Lots of people live in the future, wishing for and worrying about what they want to have and to do. In truth, we can’t relive yesterday and must not waste today by living in a fantasy tomorrow. It is the actions we take today, at this moment, which will create the promise of tomorrow. Each day we are confronted with numerous opportunities and the decisions we make, and the actions we take will determine the path of our future.
Think about how you are using your gift of time. When you are young, time appears to move at a snail’s pace. As you age, it goes by in a seeming blink of the eye. It is somewhat like a videotape speeding up as it unwinds and accelerates almost wildly near the end of the reel. There is not nearly as much tape remaining to be played as when it first began, so I must make good use of it as it plays out each day. It is important that this time I have is best well spent.
